A strong upper-level storm system is expected to strike East Tennessee Wednesday evening and will likely stick around for a couple days.“We only experience a storm system like this, once every few years or so,” Batot said.“Yes, we'll have a chance for severe storms tomorrow, but the better chance will be located to our south and east,” Batot wrote in an email to the Johnson City Press.“More importantly, this system will be followed by VERY STRONG and potentially damaging winds for much of the day Thursday, Thursday night & Friday.” The NWS estimates a 30 percent probability that a severe storm will strike at any given point in East Tennessee, with the “most severe activity capable of producing an isolated tornado or two.” Although the hail and severe thunderstorms may not impact everyone, Batot said all of the Tri-Cities area will likely feel the effects from the 30 to 50 mph wind gusts.
